April 2018: Books for All Ages about Amazing Kids

Welcome back to our monthly recommendations feature! The arrival of spring has us thinking about youth and new life, and the amazing work of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas survivors has us feeling extremely inspired. In their honor, our recommendations this month are all kid-centric, although they come from categories all over our store. Check them out below!

For adult fiction/mystery lovers, Alan Bradley's Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie is "a smart and well-written delight" (via our Great Good Bookseller Suzie). This is the first book in the series about an "11 year old chemist with a penchant for solving crimes and a wit and perspective beyond her years."

In nonfiction, anyone looking to have their heart broken should read Bana Alabed's Dear World. Bana was seven when she started her twitter account, which she used to tell her story of living in Aleppo, Syria knowing nothing but war. Despite all this, Bana has not lost hope for herself and for other refugees and victims of war.

Young adult readers should check out Elizabeth Acevedo's debut, The Poet X. April is also national poetry month, so this story told in verse is uniquely appropriate. Teenage Xiomara finds her voice in slam poetry after a lifetime of feeling suppressed by her religious Dominican mother. Great Good Bookseller Sarah says Acevedo gives her character "true voice" in this sharp debut.

Readers 10 and up will love Eliot Sappingfield's A Problematic Paradox, with genius thirteen-year old Nikola at its center. She's just about given up on her normal school when her father is kidnapped by an extraterrestrial ("a charming young lady...with the arms of a gorilla and all the charisma of a rubber boot filled with refried beans") and she is transferred to a school for geniuses with a student body that's not (entirely) human.

For parents looking to introduce their very young future readers to great kid heroes and heroines, check out books like illustrator Alison Jay's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. The classic story is told in beautiful crackle-paint pictures paired with just one descriptive verb. We have more classic tales for babies and toddlers in our kids' room too!
