Staff Reviews

A gritty and unflinching look at small town justice in the American South from the perspective of Titus Crown, a Black man, a former elite FBI profiler and this small Southern town's sheriff. Titus has a lot to contend with: what with investigating a recent school shooting that results in an officer-involved shooting that may or may not have been lawful; a weasel-y disrespectful administer attempting to coerce outcomes and micromanage that investigation; that investigation unearthing a prolific serial killer of Black children that may be hiding in plain sight; all while managing the mounting tensions surrounding a far-right group's plans to hold a parade in celebration of the town’s Confederate history. Reads like a compelling season of prestige detective shows (i.e., Mare of EastTown and True Detective). And I have to say S. A. Cosby is an amazing writer! This is some of the most powerful, gripping yet terribly haunting crime writing I've ever had the pleasure to read. A real pager-turner!

“This is an early favorite for the best crime fiction novel of the year. From the perspective of a town’s first Black sheriff and his descent into the mind of a serial killer, it’s riveting and explores issues of race, policing, and religion.”
